Horse Bits - Bombers Ported Barrel - Dressage Legal
One of my favourites for the simple versatility it provides in a number of ways and especially good for young horses while it is also excellent for many other graduated training levels as it can solve issues usually expected from more complex bitting solutions.
Bombers Bits Loose Ring Ported Barrel allows for immediate release and relief from tongue and bar pressure. The bit is immediately reset to a neutral position in the horses mouth and the diameter of the bit leaves the horse “tongue space” in addition to the port.
The Ported Barrel was created to relieve pressure on the tongue via the the medium port. As a result, this creates space for the tongue. The Barrel joint relieves pressure on the bars by spreading it over a larger area and limiting any possible nut cracker action of a conventional snaffle. The Bombers Ported Barrel bit is a direct competitor to the Myler MBO4 option which cannot provide the sweet iron bit material, although the Bombers ported barrel is slightly smaller in width dimensions. This would suggest the bit is better for horses with finer mouths that need tongue relief but without any unnecessary spare capacity width wise with the added benefits of the sweet iron material to aid acceptance and encourage salivation.
There is no potential palate pressure because as the bit is taken up by the riders reins the port tilts forwards and downwards against the tongue but with the relief the port space provides. There is also independent rein action and a fast release provided by the loose ring for more precise riding needs.
As with other ported bits the design can assist the rider with a horse that tends to rush its fences when jumping tasks are being performed.
For dressage riders the comfort provided by the tongue relief encourages the horse to bridle up and move up to the riders hand more readily, and the fast release is highly desirable so that communication can be maximised for very precise riding requirements.
All Bombers bits are made from blue sweet iron material, preferred by leading riders and trainers which is detailed below:-
- Oxidises easily
- Encourages salivation
- Helps bit acceptance and
- Is warm and sweet.
