Bomber Ultra Comfy Lockup Bit - An alternative to a snaffle action.

Bombers Ultra Comfy Lockup - Dressage Legal

Another way of dealing with the negative effects of a snaffle action is to produce the Ultra Comfy Lockup bit, which is designed to wrap around the horses mouth so that the contact is found earlier on the lips and bars of the mouth, the primary contact areas. Then Bombers have engineered into the design a locking mechanism to prevent the bit continuing to collapse bringing more and more extreme pressure on the horses lips and bars of the mouth. Note, (there is a point that the extent of the nutcracker action collapse in a snaffle brings nothing but pain and any additional stopping effect is lost). The Ultra Comfy Lockup limits the extent the bit can collapse and so at this point the bit acts more like a straight bar with room for the tongue due to the ergonomic design. If the horse does not take the initial lighter rein pressure  instruction the tongue will start to feel pressure brought about by the straight bar action of the lockup position the bit has now arrived at, which can be considered the secondary action of the bit and this educates the horse that you have this additional solution and they quickly learn to respect the initial lighter rein instruction. Once established the tongue will remain unaffected to any great extent and sit quietly in the space provided acting as a soft cushion to the bit because the horse is now less afraid of taking up the contact. Due to this new found comfort, its presence can assist the horse work through better from behind as the bit is no longer blocking the forward motion to the contact.

The Bombers bit Lock Up Ultra Comfy Loose ring includes extra curvature to the outer most regions of the mouth piece, which improves contact points with the bars and lips which largely eliminates the pinch or nutcracker action of a jointed mouthpiece. Hence giving the horse extra tongue relief.

The loose rings keep the bit mobile in the horses mouth, allowing an immediate release of pressure when rein aids cease. Furthermore, this encourages the horse to gently mouth the bit creating a lighter rein environment during ridden work.

Additionally, all bomber bits are made from blue sweet iron, because it:

  • Oxidises easily
  • Encourages salivation
  • Helps bit acceptance
  • Is warm and sweet
